History

Considered the birthplace of Maryland, St. Mary's County has a long, rich history that can be felt throughout the area. Passengers from England first settled at St. Clement's Island in 1634, which is now part of southwestern St. Mary's County. Using this island as a temporary base, the settlers scouted for a more permanent location, finally settling in the area we know as St. Mary's today.

This city was Maryland's first capital, remaining so for over 50 years until 1695, when it moved to Annapolis. St. Mary's became a prosperous area, focusing on growing tobacco and acting as hub of trade due to its peninsula location. After the Civil War, the area saw a significant economic decline, though this eventually changed with the area becoming prosperous once again.

Now, this area has become known for its proximity to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, where the nation's first astronauts were trained. The station provides the most employment opportunities in the country, helping the area become flourishing community it is today.

Hollywood, Maryland

The quiet, scenic town of Hollywood, MD is located right in the heart of St. Mary's County, which is wedged between iconic waterways like the Patuxent River, Chesapeake Bay, and the Potomac. Hollywood itself is one of the largest cities in the Patuxent-Chesapeake Corridor and is home to landmarks such as the Sotterley Plantation, in addition to plenty of interesting locations to see and explore, like Greenwell State Park and a number of marinas and landings.

According to legend, Hollywood got its name from a storeowner in 1897. The owner of Thompson's General Store, located in the Uniontown section of the community, needed a name for the post office inside the store, so he took the name from the holly tree planted in front of the store itself.

St. Mary's County, Hollywood, and surrounding cities possess a rich heritage that lends the community an air of historic pride and togetherness. The area's close proximity to Washington, D.C., in addition to several waterways and its history as a source of tobacco trade due to the many plantations in the state allowed Hollywood to become a thriving center of trade and prosperity in the Patuxent-Chesapeake Corridor.
